Choosing a material

Should you choose wood, vinyl / PVC or aluminum fencing?

Privacy, appearance and upkeep are usually what separate the three. Here’s how to compare them for your yard.

For privacy, look at solid wood or vinyl / PVC fencing. If you want to keep the view through your yard, consider open aluminum fencing. From there, the choice comes down to the appearance you like, the care you’re willing to do and the layout of the property.

It helps to picture the fence from the place you’ll see it most. That might be the kitchen window, a porch chair or the driveway. A fence that looks right beside the house may feel quite different across the back of the yard.

How the materials compare

Ask to see the actual style being quoted. The material name won’t tell you the spacing between boards, the shape of the top or how a matching gate will look.

If you like the look of wood

Wood gives you natural grain and a choice of board arrangements. A solid privacy fence can screen a patio, while a picket fence leaves more of the garden visible. Look at both sides of the proposed style, especially where you’ll sit close to it.

The finish deserves some thought before installation. Do you want a particular stain color, or would you be comfortable with the wood weathering? That choice affects the care you’ll take on.

ProWood’s finishing guidance explains the differences between clear and pigmented finishes and says to follow the finish manufacturer’s instructions. Ask about the lumber and intended finish when you discuss wood fencing.

What to expect from vinyl / PVC

Vinyl, also called PVC, is an option if you like a consistent finish and don’t want routine painting or staining. You can look at solid privacy panels or a more open picket style.

Compare the available colors, post caps and gate designs for the product you’re considering. If the yard slopes, ask how its panels will follow the ground and what the gaps underneath will look like.

Vinyl / PVC fencing still needs cleaning and occasional checks for damaged parts. Keep the product details after installation so you can find the right care instructions later.

When you want an open view

Aluminum fencing can mark the edge of a garden without closing off the view. The slim pickets leave space between them, which is useful if you want to see the planting or landscape beyond the fence.

Those gaps also mean aluminum won’t screen a sitting area the way a solid fence would. Look at the view from both sides and decide how much visibility you want.

If the fence will serve as a required pool barrier, have the exact height, spacing, gate and installation reviewed for that use. Choosing aluminum by itself doesn’t establish compliance.

A few ways to narrow it down

For a private patio, compare solid wood and PVC styles on the same proposed fence line. You’ll be able to judge the appearance and upkeep without also trying to compare two different layouts.

For a garden boundary, look at aluminum and open picket designs. Pay attention to how much of the planting you can see through each one.

If you’re drawn to wood but uncertain about the maintenance, read through the care instructions for the finish you want. Compare that work with the appearance of a PVC option. Our maintenance guide covers the questions to ask.

Common questions

Are vinyl and PVC fences the same thing?

Vinyl fencing is commonly called PVC fencing. Check the actual product and construction when comparing quotes, since the names alone won’t tell you how two systems differ.

Which material gives the most privacy?

Start with solid wood or vinyl / PVC. Height, gaps and the position of the fence also affect what someone can see from the other side.

Is any fence maintenance free?

Every fence needs some attention. Vinyl / PVC and aluminum generally avoid routine staining, but you’ll still need to clean them and check the hardware and components.
